The Illusion of Fresh Air: VOCs from Furniture, Paints and Cleaners

We tend to think of our indoor air as safer than the polluted air outside. But studies show that indoor air can be up to five times more polluted. One of the most underestimated sources? VOCs.

What Are VOCs?

VOCs stands for “Volatile Organic Compounds” chemical substances that evaporate at room temperature and enter the indoor air. Common examples include:

  • Formaldehyde

  • Benzene

  • Toluene

  • Acetone

  • Terpenes

These compounds are emitted by a surprising number of everyday items.

Where Do VOCs Come From?

Key sources in homes and workplaces include:

  • Furniture (especially made of chipboard, plywood, or coated materials)

  • Paints, varnishes, adhesives

  • Cleaning and disinfecting products

  • Scented candles, air fresheners, diffusers

  • Office equipment (e.g. laser printers, toners)

Health Effects of VOCs

VOCs can affect health in the short and long term:

  • Short-term: Eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, nausea, reduced concentration.

  • Long-term: Respiratory issues, allergies, liver and kidney damage, hormone disruption, increased cancer risk (e.g. formaldehyde and benzene).

Children, older adults, and people with pre-existing conditions are particularly vulnerable.

Why VOCs Are Especially Problematic

  • They are often colorless and odorless.

  • In unventilated rooms, they can build up quickly.

  • There are no uniform legal limits for VOC levels indoors – only guidelines.

What You Can Do

  1. Choose consciously: Look for products with eco-labels like the “Blue Angel” or EU Ecolabel.

  2. Air out new items: Let furniture or carpets off-gas in well-ventilated areas before using them.

  3. Ventilate regularly: Open windows several times a day, especially after cleaning or installing new items.

  4. Use natural alternatives: Avoid synthetic air fresheners, opt for plants or essential oils – or nothing at all.

  5. Monitor your air: CO2 and VOC sensors provide a clear picture of indoor air quality.

How Airvolut Helps

Airvolut develops electrostatic filters that remove not only particles but also many VOCs from indoor air with high efficiency. Ideal for offices, waiting rooms, industrial or residential buildings with long occupancy times.
